There’s only one proper way to celebrate next Tuesday, the most evil day of this century: National Day of Slayer! My suggestion? Grab a copy of Seasons in the Abyss, one of my favorite albums of all time, and one of the deepest, darkest, meanest slabs of metal ever recorded. Oh, I know that Reign In Blood is Slayer’s masterpiece, but Abyss has everything I need. Sure, it’s slightly more tame in sound than either that or its direct predecessor, South of Heaven, but in spirit there’s a seriously disturbing sense of lurking menace that I just don’t find in their earlier works. And if you need another excuse, Dave Lombardo’s drumming is some of the finest, fastest, most intense and yet most cerebral in metal. The man is a machine.
