Keith Jarrett gives it to “assholes with cameras”

Notice the camera shooting this sinks noticeably when he says “including that red light right there.”

While I think it was terribly rude on his part – he could have phrased this in a much nicer way and at least given his audience some thanks for being there to support him – it has to be pretty frustrating to actually see video cameras out there in the audience, not to mention flashes going off from still cameras. Or maybe he was just upset at people catching him on video making that sound while he plays that sounds not unlike those that Snoopy made when he was upset.

  1. As someone who has immense respect for Keith’s diverse talents, I feel compelled to comment here. I understand that his displeasure was voiced very rudely…my only guess is that he was extremely pissed off and his anger got the best of him.

However…I am increasingly sick and tired of people who come to a concert – which is supposed to be a place to simply enjoy a live music listening experience – and fuss around with cameras, cell phones and the like. I understand where he’s coming from.

  2. I fully agree, Chris. This is, however, the kind of behavior that gets people to say they’ll never buy their music again, never go to their concerts, etc. I’m not kidding – this is what I’m reading in the All About Jazz forums in relation to this. As I’ve said before, people don’t like to admit that their favorite artists may not be the most well-spoken or courteous people, but that shouldn’t matter since what they’re listening to is the music. I mean, how many people still think Miles Davis is a genius after all the evidence supports that the dude just wasn’t all that nice of a person? I don’t understand why this is any different. People who use behavior as a reason to stop listening to someone probably didn’t care all that much about the music in the first place.
