Complete Coltrane insanity

Filed under: Music — Tom @ 12:29 pm

Perhaps to make up for screwing me (and, likely, you) over so many times, Best Buy has apparently lost their mind and prices the recent Coltrane retrospective box, The Impulse! Albums Volume 1, a five disc set, at a whopping $11.99. Let me repeat that so it can sink in: five John Coltrane albums for $11.99. You do have to have it shipped, from what I am reading, but for what amounts to about $15 total after taxes and shipping, you cannot complain about $3 an album. These boxes aren’t even this cheap used on Amazon.

Why buy this? Because even after the multiple “complete” boxes of Coltrane I own, I still am missing some of the material on the albums in this set. And, to be honest, those complete boxes kind of ruin things – hearing things in the order they were recorded is interesting, but there’s a reason they were compiled on the albums in a particular order, and I’d rather hear them that way. Beautiful as they are (and the Complete Quartet remains one of my most prized, most beautiful boxsets) they take a certain mindset to appreciate. I’ll probably sucker-down and buy these boxes as they come out now – especially if they continue to do so at this kind of price.

  2. Best Buy appears to have come to their senses, unfortunately. The link you provided now shows the set going for $44.99.
